Muktis avoid relegation

Muktijoddha Sangsad avoided relegation from the Bangladesh Premier League after playing out a goalless draw against Team BJMC in their last match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

A third draw from 22 matches took Muktijoddha to the safe zone with 18 points, four clear of bottom-placed Rahmatganj and one ahead of 11th-placed Farashganj, while Team BJMC remained ninth with 20 points.

The result means the relegation battle is down to two teams -- Rahmatganj and Farashganj. Rahmatganj must get all three points against Saif SC today to avoid relegation and condemn their Old Dhaka neighbours. Anything other than a win will see Rahmatganj go down.

In the day's other match, Brothers Union beat Mohammedan 1-0 to avenge their 4-3 defeat in the first leg. Ariful Islam scored the decisive goal in the 26th minute.

With a fifth win from 22 matches, Brothers climbed up to seventh position, but they may lose that position today if Arambagh, who have 20 points, beat Sheikh Russel.

Mohammedan finished fifth in the 12-team table with 32 points, a big improvement for the falling giants, who finished 10th last season.
