Verdict today

The judgment in a money-laundering case against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and his friend Giasuddin Al Mamun will be delivered today.
Judge Md Motahar Hossain of the Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka will pronounce the verdict at about 11:00am, court sources said.
This will be the first judgment in one of the 16 cases against Tarique who has been in London since September 2008.
Ahead of the judgment, some 16 closed-circuit cameras have been set up on the court premises for monitoring any untoward incident. Moreover, over 800 law enforcers will be deployed in the area, said Anisur Rahman, additional deputy commissioner (Prosecution and Information Department) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Elder son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and late president Ziaur Rahman, Tarique was arrested in 2007, during an anti-graft crackdown by the military-backed caretaker government.
He has been shown fugitive in the money-laundering case, while his friend Mamun is in custody.
If the charges are proved against the duo, they will face maximum seven years' imprisonment, the highest punishment in the Money Laundering Act, 2009.
On Thursday, the trial court fixed today for delivery of the verdict of the case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case against the two on October 26, 2009, on charges of siphoning off Tk 20.41 crore to Singapore between 2003 and 2007.
Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday expressed his apprehension that the court might deliver the verdict in the money-laundering case against Tarique and Mamun.
“A verdict will be pronounced against our leader Tarique Rahman. Nothing has so far been proved [against Tarique] in the case. Therefore, the judgment will be based on a false case,” he said, adding that the government is yet to prove a single allegation against Tarique.
The BNP leader was speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.
