VERTICAL HORIZON'S GO
Year: 2003
Genre: Alternative
“Go” is a brilliant album with varied songs put together, with each of them fitting different occasions and moods. All of that was within the boundaries of the “Alternative” genre. Sometimes the album pushed the boundaries, attempting to broaden it.
The first track, “When You Cry”, has a touch of Rock. Even if you forget about the song, the music will haunt you. After listening to the album, if a musical score is played through your mind that you just can't put your finger on, it's probably this. “I'm Still Here” is the most popular song from the album, though the pedestal does erode when you play it 50 times in succession. But that is to be expected. Different people will have different interpretations of “Forever.” To me it seems like a song about a departed friend. It has a soothing effect. If you want better of the same effect, I'd recommend forwarding to the end of the album and playing track 12, “Underwater.” It raises your spirits passively and it might actually be a song about drowning. Well, I love it, so how bad can it be?
Going back to the fourth track, the music is catchy and goes well with the vocals and lyrics. Though I can't relate to this song, I know people who can. I'm not sure which song would be my favourite from this album, considering all the “fives,” but I believe the top contenders are “Echo” (track 6) and “Sunshine” (track 7). “Echo” has a message expressed uniquely about not wanting to be more of the same: “We come and we go. No I don't want to be just another echo, echo.” “Sunshine” is just as good; there is an interesting contrast to “Underwater” as it cheers you up with a bit more “oomph”. The music may have been influenced by Metal. But don't let that deter all you uninformed folks who loathe Metal after one unpleasant experience. At best, this song could be mistaken for Rock. And it's a happy song.
I'm yet to hear their new album, “Echoes From The Underground”, which came out in October. If their track record is anything to go by, their new album will be great as well.
