OBLIVION DOESN'T DISAPPOINT

MY RATING: 8.5/10 MY RATING: 8.5/10

Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman in a sci-fi movie directed by Joseph Kosinski -- this was bound to be good. And while it certainly was no “Minority Report”, it was still a great movie.
After decades of war with an alien race known as the Scavs, Earth is ravaged. The Scavs destroyed the moon to devastating effects. Tsunamis, earthquakes, tornados laid waste to the planet. Then they sent down their army to defeat mankind. Mankind won the war, but at the cost of their planet. The survivors went to live in Titan, a moon of Jupiter.
Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is a technician who repairs the drones that are on Earth. The drones find and hunt surviving Scavs. He and his partner, Victoria had a memory wipe for security measures. Things change when a spacecraft crash lands on Earth with mysteries that shakes Jack's world upside down.
To be honest, the plot wasn't extraordinary. You are not likely to see anything new here that you haven't seen or read in some other sci-fi. (The plot twist here still got me, though.) There were interesting developments that were not portrayed as well as they could have been and a lot of unanswered questions remain after you're done watching the movie.
That said, “Oblivion” was thoroughly enjoyable. It starts off rather slow like most post-apocalyptic movies. But once it picks up pace, it's a hell of a ride. Morgan Freeman is here to stand there and sound deep. Oh, also, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the guy who played Jaime Lannister in “Game of Thrones”, plays this badass character who shoots things with dead accuracy. Pretty cool.
The direction in particular was brilliant. Kosinski pulls off the scenes perfectly. The ending sent shivers down my spine as I watched it. This guy knows how to bring in the perfect climax. The sound tracks were perfect, giving exactly the right feels in the moments.
Visually, this is one of the most brilliant movies you are likely to see this year. Definitely watch this in HD. You should watch all movies in HD, really.
The Good: Brilliant audio and visuals, great direction, Tom Cruise's smile.
The Bad: A lot of ambiguity in the end, story is nothing overly awesome.
Verdict: I really liked Oblivion. If you enjoy a good sci-fi thriller, I see no reason not to watch this. This movie is not at all pretentious. It's exactly what it claims to be. I fail to see how this movie can disappoint someone looking for this sort of stuff.
