Shamim Zaman Fired by a dream

Actor, playwright, director -- Shamim Zaman is juggling the three roles well. Coming into the scene through theatre, Zaman started writing and directing TV plays. In a recent conversation with The Daily Star, the multifaceted artiste spoke about his initiation into theatre, his works and more.
How long has it been since you joined theatre?
Shamim Zaman: I have been involved with theatre troupe “Aranyak” since 1989. It's been 24 years; I want to maintain the association till my last breath.
What was your first TV drama?
Shamim Zaman: It was “Droho Binash”, directed by Abdullah Al Mamun that went on air on BTV.
Which drama, do you think, made you popular?
Shamim Zaman: RTV telecast a serial named “Alta Sundari”. I acted in Alta Sundori's character which catapulted me into the limelight. Another one is “Doyagonj”, where Tarin was my co-actor.
You also write plays. Tell us about it.  
Shamim Zaman: I have written over ten plays which have already been telecast. I developed an interest in scripting plays while I was working on TV dramas. In future, I hope to write a drama serial.
What spurred you to direct plays?
Shamim Zaman: For many years, I cherished a dream to direct a drama. I think an artiste cannot get fulfillment in this industry without directing plays. As an artiste I feel a kind of hunger to do that.
Tell about your directorial debut.
Shamim Zaman: My first drama is “Rajab Ali O Taar Kafoner Kotha”. Written by me, the play went on air on Desh TV.
Any dramas coming up for Eid?
Shamim Zaman: I am directing a number of plays for the upcoming Eid. One is “Ukil Jamai”; Zahid Hasan has donned the main role in it. Another drama is “Doctor Jamai”, with Mosharraf Karim playing the protagonist.
What's your take on directing drama serials?
Shamim Zaman: I am directing a drama series named “Tintala Tin Chabi”, it will promote after Eid on RTV. I have also directed “Haatkhola” for Banglavision.
Does it get difficult to be an actor, director and playwright at the same time?
Shamim Zaman: No, I think it works properly when I engage my honest effort and do hard work.
