UP polls campaigner critically injured by rivals

Election coordinator of a UP chairman candidate was critically injured in an attack by his rivals at Hindupara in Sadar upazila last night.

Witnesses said some musclemen led by chairman candidate Saiful Islam mercilessly beat up Badruzzaman Sarker alias Bodu Member, 45, with iron rods and hockey-sticks at about 8:30pm on his way home from Narsingdi Bazaar.

The injured, election coordinator of another chairman candidate Yusuf Khan Pintu, was admitted to Sadar Hospital. Later, he was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with severe head injuries.

Saiful Islam, accused in several cases, was released from the district jail four months back, police said.
