Youth shot dead in Rangamati

A member of MN Larma faction of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) was shot dead allegedly by “pro-peace supporters” at Marishya union in Rangamati yesterday.
The deceased is Dipan Chakma, 30, from Khedarmara union under Baghaichhari upazila. He was an activist of Juba Samity, union committee of Manabendra Narayan Larma (MN Larma).
Dipan was out on a tour doing some party activity at Baribindughat. Around 9:30am, he was passing by a tobacco field where a group of gunmen had been lying in wait, locals said.
They opened fire on him point-blank, killing him there and then, and fled the scene.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
“We found five empty cartridges in the spot,” said Sub-Inspector Abdur Razzaq of Baghaichhari Police Station. “Preparations for filing a case are underway.”
MN Larma faction secretary Aungsuman Chakma in a press release yesterday said “[PCJSS president] Santu Larma's gang” ambushed Dipan and “riddled him with bullets”.
He condemned the incident and demanded exemplary punishment of the killers.
Sajib Chakma, assistant information secretary of the PCJSS, denied the allegations. “I heard the killing might be due to a conflict between MN Larma faction and UPDF [United People's Democratic Front],” he observed.
