Zillur's leadership helped restore democracy
Says Hasina
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said democracy returned in the country after the phase of the 1/11 political changeover for the bold leadership of late president Zillur Rahman.
“Had president Zillur Rahman not played a valiant role, democracy might not have been restored in the country. He left us at a time when Bangladesh badly needs him,” she told a meeting of the AL Central Working Committee (ALCWC) at her Gono Bhaban residence.
The meeting was declared adjourned in honour of Zillur following adoption of a condolence motion.
Hasina, also president of the ruling Awami League, said, “A chapter of the history of Bangladesh ended with the death of Zillur Rahman.” He was acceptable to all irrespective of any political party and became the guardian of all and the country, she said, recalling his contributions.
Zillur Rahman died in a Singapore hospital on Wednesday aged 84.
