Wild elephants go on rampage in Rangamati

RANGAMATI, Jan 13: Like every year, this year too, wild elephants have gone on rampage in Kaokhali thana. Two persons have lost their lives within two days.

Crops on a vast tract of land have been damaged and many houses have been destroyed by the wild elephants. Residents of the area are moving to safer places.

 

Recently the wild elephants attacked suddenly on the sugar mill model village of Kaokhali and destroyed houses and crops. At one stage, a young man Md Nasir,32, died on the spot. The elephants went to deep forest after destruction of houses and crops.

After a couple of days, in a similar way another village Thanddachai came under attack. As a result a woman Anwara Begum,42, died on the spot.

 

In most areas in these villages, harvesting of crops are over. The elephants not only destroyed crops but also plants, vegitables and houses of the area.

 

Last year in September the wild elephants went on rampage at Godarpor, Chowdhury Para, Naillachari and Gilachari of Betbunia union in Kaokhali thana and within 15 days five persons were killed including a woman and a child. Crops, houses and vegetables worth more than Taka 10 lakh were destroyed.

 

Betbunia Union Parisad chairman Aung Sui Pra Chowdhury said that about six months back these wild elephants had attacked Chowdhury Para village of his union and destroyed about 30 houses and various paddy field.

 

Since the last couple of weeks these elephants have so far went on rampage at Chowdhury Para, Dabua, Sugarmill model village and Thanddachari.

People of these areas are very much anxious and scared. Everyday news of loss of human lives, damage of property, attack on crops are being received. In some of the areas, people are guarding their property.

 

The wild elephants were staying in deep forest between Kalampati and Thanddachari area till filing of this report.
