Two shot dead in Noakhali allegedly by extortionist
A man and a woman were shot dead and two others bullet-hit following a feud over a trifling matter in Begumganj upazila of the district yesterday morning.
The deceased were identified as Khalil Mian, 45, and Setara Begum, 65, of Jagadishpur village under Alyapur union in the upazila.
Acting officer in-charge (OC) Nazimuddin of Begumganj police station said that a mobile set of one Sabuj, son of Lokman Hossain, went missing while he was bathing at a pond near their house on Monday afternoon.
An altercation took place between Sabuj and his uncle Khalil Mian over the issue.
Yesterday morning, Sabuj again engaged in a fierce quarrel with his uncle. At one stage, he started firing from a gun indiscriminately at Khalil and others at the place.
Setara Begum died on the spot while Khalil succumbed to his injuries on the way to Noakhali Medical College Hospital.
Two women Parvin Akther and Roksana Akther were hit by bullets in the incident. They were taken to Noakhali Medical College Hospital and a private clinic for treatment.
Khalil's elder brother Shahidullah, however, said that Sabuj was an extortionist.
He was demanding Tk 2 lakh as illegal toll from us as we were building a wall of our house, he said.
Yesterday morning, Sabuj along with his men demanded the money from Khalil. As he declined, at one stage of altercation opened fire indiscriminately, he said.
