Students lock main gate of Queens University
Students of Queens University (QU) in the city yesterday locked the main gate of the university for about three hours protesting what they termed irregularities and corruption by the university authorities.
The "Queens University Chhatra Sangram Parishad (QUCSP)" also submitted a 30-point demand to the authorities, which include stopping 'conspiracy' to oust the vice -chancellor (VC) and appointing VCs on the basis of the President's recommendations, stopping expulsion of the students illegally and increasing the number of hostel seats. The students also demanded permission for setting up of students' union at the university.
QU sources said, the students who were agitating on the campus for the last few days to press their demands had locked the gate at about 11am confining the teachers and the students.
They brought out a procession and organised a rally on the campus at about 12 noon, from where the QUCSP decided to boycott classes until the realisation of their demands, sources said.
They also submitted a memorandum to the VC for taking necessary steps to implement their demands immediately.
The students will gherao the Ministry of Education and the office of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to realise their demands, a press release said.
The students also formed a 57-member convening committee to continue the movement and collect mass signatures in favour of their demands.
