Lightning kills two

Two people were killed and five others injured as a lightning struck them at Dighirhat village in Sapahar upazila of Naogaon yesterday. The deceased were identified as Anwar Hossain, 32, son of Nazir Hossain of Nirapara village and Bodhuli Orao, 35, wife of Shukulal Orao of Dighirhat village under Sapahar upazila. Police and locals said, a lightning struck them at around 3:15pm when they were working at a paddy field at the village. Anwar and Bodhuli Orao died on the spot while five others were seriously injured.
Youth kills mother

A youth hacked his mother to death at Biribari village in Shibpur union of Gobindaganj upazila on Tuesday night. Police said, Abdul Halim, 25, repeatedly stabbed his mother Halima Begum, 45, following a feud over a trivial matter and fled the scene. Halima was rushed to Gobindaganj health complex where doctor pronounced her dead. Locals said Halim was demanding money from his family to buy a rickshaw. On Saturday last, another youth of the same union stabbed his father to death as he refused to give his son a CNG run autorickshaw.
Man gets life in Netrakona

Additional District and Session Judge Mohammad Abdul Hamid sentenced a man to life term imprisonment and fined him Tk 20 thousand, in default, to suffer two years more in jail for rape of a housewife. The convict is Khokon Mia, son of Rustom Ali of village Sunaikanda under Purbadhola upazila in the district. According to the case, on January 18 midnight in 2004, Khokan entered the house of one Shahid Mia of same village and raped his wife.
Outlaw killed in Khulna

A member of an outlawed party was found dead at Alka village in Phultala upazila yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Shahin Sheikh, 25, son of Salu alias Shilu Sheikh of Gopinathpur village in Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore. Police said, locals spotted the body of Shahin at a fish enclosure at the village in the morning and informed them. Later, the law enforcers recovered the body. Officer in charge of Phultala police station M Emdad Hossain said, party rivals might have strangled Shahin elsewhere and dumped the body at the fish enclosure. He said Shahin was accused in cases filed for various criminal activities.
Youth beaten to death

A youth was beaten to death by criminals in Pouli area of Kalihati upazila on Monday. The victim was identified as Joy Chandra Das, 22, son of Babul Chandra Das of Baganbari in the district town. Quoting the victim's family members, police said Joy went out of his house in the evening to meet his friends at Deola. Later a gang took him to a house at Pouli where they beat him up mercilessly. Joy died at Tangail general hospital at night.
BGB detains 24 on border

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained 24 Bangladesh nationals while entering the country from the Indian territory illegally through Putkhali border early on Tuesday. Lt. Col Tayef-ul-Haque, camp in-charge of BGB Battalion-23 Putkhali, said they arrested the group of 24, including five women and a child. They hailed from Khulna, Narail and Bagerhat districts. They were handed over to Benapole Port police station.
Jewellery shop looted

Robbers stormed into a jewellery shop and looted gold and other ornaments at Monohorgonj Bazaar in Monohorgonj upazila on Tuesday. Officer in-charge of Monohorgonj PS Sadiqur Rahman said, breaking open the shutter, a gang of robbers entered the jewellery shop of Bidhan Saha at about 5.30am and looted 35 tolas gold and 20 tolas silver ornaments and cash Tk. 3 lakh. On information, police rush to the spot, but could not arrest any one in this connection.
Woman stabbed to death

A mother of two was stabbed to death allegedly by her former husband at Fotiabad village in Debidwar upazila on Monday night. The deceased was identified as Aisha Akhter, 28, daughter of Abul Hossain of the village. Officer in-charge of Debidwar PS Golam Morshed said, Abdul Kadir, 32, son of Abu Taher of Rajameher village of the upazila stabbed his former wife indiscriminately in Faotiabad area at around 11.30pm, killing her on the spot. Police later arrested Abdul Kadir who confessed to killing Aisha.
