Outlaw killed in Pabna

An alleged operative of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) Red Flag faction was stabbed to death in Santhia upazila early yesterday over intra-party feud. The deceased is Md Akul Pramanik, 40, son of Azahar Pramanik of Bhainapara village. Locals found Akul's body floating on Sonakandi canal in the upazila and informed police early in the morning. Rival party men might have killed Akul, said Md Shahed Mahamud, officer in-charge of Santhia police station. He was accused in a number of cases including one for murder, said the OC.
21 detained at border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members arrested 21 people, including women and children, while they were going to India illegally through Putkhali frontier Sunday morning. 23 BGB battalion commanding officer Lt. Col. Tayef-ul-Haq said, acting on a tip-off that some people were trying to enter India without valid documents they launched a drive along the border and arrested 10 men, two women and nine children.
Lightning kills two

Two people were killed and two others injured when a lightning struck them in Nagarpur upazila yesterday. The deceased were identified as Mintu Miah, 45, of Dakkhin Nagarpur village and Mohammad Ador Ali, 35, of Mir Kustia village. Seriously injured Lalon Miah, 28, of Kathuri village and Sonai Miah, 30, of Alokdia village were admitted to the upazila health complex. The four people were hit by lightning when they were catching fish at a local water body during rain at around 2:00pm, police and locals said.
Husband sued for torture

Chandpur model police yesterday arrested the owner of a private clinic in Taltola area of the town on charge of torturing his wife for dowry. The arrestee was identified as Dr Ahsan Ullah, owner of Sima Hospital. Police said Dr Sima Ahsan, wife of the arrestee, filed a case under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 with the police station yesterday morning. According to the case statement, Dr Ahsan used to torture Sima mentally and physically as she refused to meet his dowry demand of Tk 15 lakh.
'Drug peddler' murdered

An alleged drug peddler was stabbed to death by criminals over drug trading at Alipur in the district town on Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Shawon Mollah, 28, son of Sohrab Mollah of Kha Para of Dakkhin Alipur of the town. Witnesses said a gang of armed miscreants swooped on Shawon and chopped him with lethal weapons indiscriminately near his house at about 10:30pm while he was going home by a motorcycle. Critically injured Shawon was rushed to Faridpur General Hospital where the on duty doctors declared him dead.
Jail guards held with arms

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive arrested two jail guards along with pistol and bullets in Faridpur Medical College Hospital area in the town on Saturday. The arrestees are Mizanur Rahman and Ashraful Islam -- two jail guards of Faridpur district jail. Assistant Police Superintendent Sumon Deb of Rab-8 said, being tipped-off, a Rab team raided the area at about 3pm and arrested Mizanur and Ashraful along with one foreign made pistol, five bullets and one magazine.
