Traders of Saturia Bazar under Saturia upazila of the district yesterday demanded construction of a bridge over Gazikhali River and a road connecting the bridge and the bazar.
They made the demands at a human chain formed at the bazaar in the morning. Around 750 traders under the banner of 'Nagorik Oikya Committee' joined the programme, keeping their shops closed for four hours from 8:00am.
Addressing a rally at the venue, the traders alleged that the Roads and Highways Department had earlier decided to construct a bridge over the river and a road linking the bazaar and the bridge. Now the department has changed its decision and is going to construct the bridge at another place located under Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district, they said.
The urged the authorities concerned not to change the site and build the bridge on the western side of Saturia Bazar for the sake of thousands of people, including traders and farmers.
Saturia Bazar Committee president Babul Khan, Secretary Ershad Ali Chowdhury, Nagorik Oikya Committee Convener Shafiqul Islam Dudu, Joint Conveners Nure Kutub Alam Selim, Md Asaduzzaman, Abdus Salam, Anil Chandra Saha, Iqbal Hossain Khasru and Raju Ahmed addressed the rally.
