Salimullah medical college closes for indefinite period

Following a two-day stand-off between the students and staff of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, the college in the capital was declared closed yesterday for an indefinite period.
The institution will not open “until the situation becomes normal”, Principal Prof Dilip Kumar Dhar told journalists.
He also asked all the residential students to leave the campus by 7:00am today.
Meanwhile, the class IV employees who have been abstaining from work since Tuesday morning will not resume their work “unless their safety is ensured by the authorities,” said Jahangir Alam, general secretary of Class IV Employees Association.
After the clash between the employees and interns early Tuesday, all the medical services at the hospital were disrupted.
Some employees said they could not join their work due to a fear of further violence.
The clash left at least 20 injured with two class IV employees admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
