Obituary

Syeda Razia Faiz, a former lawmaker and minister, died of old age related ailments at United Hospital in the capital on Friday afternoon. She was 77.
Razia, wife of late Petrobangla chairman Mohammad Abul Faiz, left behind her daughter Fawzia Alam, sons Osman Ershad Faiz and Aman Ashraf Faiz, and a host of relatives to mourn her death, says a press release.
Her qulkhwani will be held at her Gulshan residence in the capital tomorrow after Maghrib prayers.
Daughter of late Syed Badrudduja, former mayor of Kolkata and member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly and India's Lok Sabha, Razia served as a member of the Pakistan National Assembly in the 1960s.
In the independent Bangladesh, she became the first woman member directly elected in Jatiya Sangsad in 1979.
In 1989, she became women and social welfare minister. At the time of her death, she was a vice president of BNP.
