AP Dhaka bureau chief Farid Hossain retires

Farid Hossain, Dhaka bureau chief of Associated Press, retired after 27 years of service with the New York-based global news agency.
He is succeeded by AP's Bangladesh Correspondent Julhas Alam who has been with the news agency since 2004.
Farid's retirement, effective from today, comes as he reached 60, when an AP employee is required to retire, said an AP release. Starting his career with The Daily Star, Julhas also worked for New Age and others.

 

Man found dead in Ctg

A man was found dead on a water tank in a roof of a one-storey building at Lalkhan Bazar Tankir Pahar in Chittagong city yesterday.
Deceased, Md Abir, 28, of Comilla, was a thief, said Khulshi police.
Police suspect that either Abir was caught red-handed and pushed from the nearby four-storey building after being beaten to death or he accidentally fell from there while trying to flee.
The body bore injury marks in the head and leg, said police.

 

Asia Foundation donates 4,000 books to educational institutions

The Asia Foundation Bangladesh yesterday donated 4,000 books to the libraries of 20 educational institutions at a function Kalatiya High School Auditorium in Keraniganj upazila of Dhaka.
Two NGOs -- Eakok Attomanobik Unnayan Sangstha and Media Communication Foundation -- organised the event.
Shaik Yusuf Harun, deputy commissioner of Dhaka, attended the programme as the chief guest.
Saima Anwer, deputy country representative of the foundation, Sukla Dey, coordinator of Books for Asia, and Babul Mia, upazila nirbahi officer, also attended the event.

 

Kuet celebrates anniversary today

Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) will celebrate its 10th founding anniversary on the campus today.
The Kuet authorities have chalked out different programmes, including a colourful rally, discussion, students-teachers friendly cricket match and screening of films, to mark the anniversary.
A sculptor on the Liberation War, Durbar Bangla, will be inaugurated on the occasion. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid is expected to attend the programme as the chief guest.

 

Road crashes kill two

A man died after a motorbike hit him in C&B area of the port city on Friday night, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
The deceased was Harunur Rashid, 75, of Bhola district.
Our Lalmonirhat correspondent adds, Shaheen Hossain, 20, son of Rostam Ali of Sadar upazila, died on the spot after a truck hit him at Mostofi on Rangpur-Kurigram road in the upazila yesterday.

 

Missing man found dead in Gazipur

Police yesterday recovered the body of a man, who went missing on Thursday night, from a waterbody at Baghdi in Kaliganj.
The deceased was Rony Gomes, 33, son of Bijoy Gomes.
Kaliganj police said Rony had been missing since Sony Gomes, his wife's cousin brother, invited him for fishing in a marsh near the waterbody. Locals held and handed over Sony to police.
The decomposing body with marks of beating on the forehead was sent to Gazipur Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
