PM hosts iftar for professionals

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday hosted an iftar party for the leaders of different professional bodies at her official residence Gono Bhaban in the capital.
Vice chancellors and teachers of different universities, intellectuals, journalists, writers, artistes, singers, physicians, engineers, lawyers, businessmen and players attended the iftar.
Eminent jurist Barrister Rafiqul Haque, noted economist Prof Rehman Sobhan, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, and Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury were, among others, attended the event.
Day labourer 'commits suicide'

A day labourer allegedly committed suicide at Dhaka Udyan in the capital's Mohammadpur yesterday.
The deceased Mohammad Hanif, 18, was hailing from Namrail in Mymensigh.
He was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in the house of his relative where he had been living.
Mohammadpur Police Station Inspector Mohammad Abdul Matin, quoting Hanif's relatives, told The Daily Star that family feuds led to the suicide.
The police recovered the body around 6:15pm.
Two held for cutting hills in Ctg

Police arrested two youths while they were cutting a hill, Ukil Somitir Pahar, in Shapla Residential Area at Akber Shah of Chittagong city yesterday.
They are Md Sohag and Khalilur Rahman.
During primary interrogation, they admitted that Selim and Jakir ordered them to cut the hill for building an apartment there, Akber Shah police.
A case was filed. Earlier on Wednesday, another man was held while cutting a hill in the area.
Three arrested with firearm

Police arrested three men and seized a locally-made gun, three cartridges and two daggers from their possession at Patiya upazila in Chittagong yesterday.
Md Arif, Md Jabed and Gias Uddin were arrested before Lorihora Primary School at Jangalkhain union around 12:00am while they were planning to commit a robbery in the area, said Patiya police.
A case was filed in this regard.
Man dies after taking poison in Ctg

A man died on Friday a day after taking poison in his Dakshin Sonaichhari residence at Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong.
Ful Meah, 42, took poison on Thursday evening following a family feud. His family rushed him to a local hospital from where he returned home the same night as his family was unable to bear further medical expenses, said police.
Sitakunda police yesterday sent the body to Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Man shot by rivals in Ctg

A man was shot and injured in Bogarbil area of Chittagong city yesterday.
Md Tipu, 34, is undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Tipu sustained six bullet injuries while his rival group shot him with a pipe gun following a long-standing dispute over establishing supremacy in the area, said Chawkbazar police.
Police detained three people, including one Asif, in this connection in the area and recovered a pipe gun and two bullets from them.
Five human skeletons recovered

Police recovered five human skeletons from Bilshimla Bondogate area in Rajshahi city on Friday night.
ABM Rezaul Karim, acting officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station, said on information, a team of patrol police raided Bilshimla Bondogate area close to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital and recovered the five skeletons kept in a sack around 10:00pm.
The police suspected that smugglers might have brought the human skeletons from India.
The smugglers fled the scene sensing the presence of police, he added.
