Prof Yunus to be accorded reception in Ctg

Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, who has recently received the US Congressional Gold Medal, will be accorded a reception in the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium of Chittagong city on June 20.
It was announced at a meeting of Dr Yunus Surid (a network of Yunus' friends) held yesterday at its Lalkhan Bazar office in the port city.
Willing participants are requested to register for entry cards.
17 Shibir men held with jihadi books

Police arrested 17 Islami Chhatra Shibir men raiding a seven-storey building, known as Shibir's mess, at Mirhazaribagh of the capital's Shyampur yesterday.
"Subversive materials, including leaflets and jihadi books, were recovered from them," said Abdul Rashid, officer-in-charge of Shyampur Police Station.
The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami backed student body are being interrogated at the police station, he added.
2 Shibir men held for giving death threat to Muhith

Police arrested two activists of pro-Jamaat Islami Chhatra Shibir at Kadomtoli in Dakshin Surma area of Sylhet early yesterday on a charge of issuing a death threat to Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Friday.
The arrested are Faizur Rahman of Chhanbaria Bazar village in Companiganj upazila, Sylhet; and Abdul Maleque Bhuiyan of Charbhadra village in Nandail upazila, Mymensingh.
They gave the threat through SMS over cellphone, said SM Rokon Uddin, additional commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
RMG workers go on strike in Gazipur for attendance bonus hike

Garment workers went on a strike in Unigears Factory in Barobari of Gazipur Sadar upazila yesterday morning demanding a hike in attendance bonus to Tk 600 from Tk 400.
Mosaharaf Hosssain, an assistant superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police, said they also demanded Tk 400 each per month as lunch bill.
In the afternoon, the factory authorities assured the workers of discussing the issue with the management and released them for the day.
Youth dies of stab wounds in Keraniganj

A man, stabbed allegedly by the "henchmen" of his sister's landlord in South Keraniganj in Dhaka on Friday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday.
The deceased was Nasir Majumdar, 32.
Salek Talukder, husband of Nasir's sister Maksuda, was beaten up by the henchmen over an electricity bill dispute, said South Keraniganj police.
Nasir was stabbed in the head with a sharp weapon when he went there from the nearby area, the police added.
Schoolboy dies as train hits him

A schoolboy died after a train hit him at Malibagh rail crossing in the capital yesterday.
Faysal Ahmed, 14, son of Khandaker Feroz Ahmed, used to reside at Rampura.
A train hit Faysal while he was crossing the rail tracks, said Dhaka Railway police.
Faysal died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Youths in Ctg seek speedy war crimes trial

A number of youths in Chittagong city yesterday afternoon urged the government to expedite the war crimes trial and ban Jamaat-Shibir as well as Hefajat-e Islam.
The demands came from a programme titled “Progressive Youth Rally” organised by Tarunya Squad, a youth organisation, before Chittagong Shaheed Minar.
Shaheed Janani Rama Chowdhury and martyred intellectual Dr Abdul Aleem's daughter Nujhat Chowdhury also addressed the rally with the squad Convener Ismail Azad Shakil in the chair.
'Robber' beaten to death in Ctg

An alleged robber was killed and three other accomplices were injured in a mass beating at Shahidpur in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong early yesterday.
The deceased was Sabuj, 25.
Jorarganj police said Sabuj and his five cohorts, equipped with sharp weapons, attacked the house of one Abu Taher during a marriage ceremony.
Locals beat them up, killing Sabuj. The injured were handed over to police while the others fled, the police added.
