Munshiganj police foil 'plot to kill' AL leader
Law enforcers claimed to have foiled a plot to kill a union-level leader of Awami League in Munshiganj.
Six people, who were arrested from Munshiganj ferry terminal early Thursday, confessed that they had been hired to kill local AL leader Ashraf Hossain, said Hafizur Rahman, a sub-inspector who is in-charge of the terminal's police outpost.
The SI however could not say anything about the person who had hired them, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
Ashraf is general secretary of AL Medinimandal union unit in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj.
Demanding immediate punishment of the plotters, the activists of local AL and its associate bodies blocked the Dhaka-Mawa highway at Mawa point around 9:00am.
Transport movement resumed at about 12:30am as the locals withdrew the blockade from the highway after a negotiation with the law enforcers.
Police, on secret information, intercepted a microbus carrying a sticker of press at the ferry terminal around 12:30am and arrested six people along with five firearms and 18 bullets, said SI Hafizur.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, two others members of the gang however managed to escape the scene.
The arrestees -- Chapati Shamsu, 45, killer Riazul Islam Titu, 30, Iramat, 30, Mohammad Ali, 35, Md Alamin, 38, and Md Sadeque, 35 -- are top criminals in Dhaka, he added.
"The arrestees confessed to being hired to kill Ashraf," the SI said.
The Awami League leader has taken lease the Mawa ferry terminal, he said.
Police got the sensational information after quizzing the arrestees, said Habibur Rahman, superintendent of police in Munshiganj.
Two cases were filed against the six with Louhajang Police Station on charge of possessing drug, firearms and bullets, said Zakiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the police station.
