Life in Litchi Flavour
Life in Litchi Flavour
Dinajpur first entered the history books with its litchis as many as 60 years ago. With the passage of time, the district has only done better, to a point where today its litchis are a booming sector and play a significant part in its economy. Observe the figures, as the Department of Agricultural Extension gives them to you: the litchis of Dinajpur fetch as much as Tk.1,400 crore annually.
And, yes, litchis have crossed frontiers, going into such diverse regions as Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj. With 3,000 hectares of land given over to litchi cultivation, it is not hard to see why 40 lakh kilograms of the succulent fruit are produced annually. Thousands of litchi orchards on a commercial basis have been in production, which in turn has meant employment opportunities for many.
Litchis come in various names and kinds. Think of bedana, madraji, bombaiya,China-3 and a few others. Their juiciness is all. They come trippingly to the taste buds.
Litchis are sweet. So is life, especially in this season of good cheer.
