Kamran, Arif accuse each other of rules violation in Sylhet
The two main mayoral candidates from the ruling and opposition blocs in the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation election yesterday accused each other of violating electoral rules.
BNP-backed Ariful Haque Chowdhury, a central leader of the party, said the ruling alliance-backed Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran and his men were "terrorising his campaigners".
On his campaign trail in the Kastoghar area, he said Kamran was still violating the electoral code even after the Election Commission had warned him.
Kamran, the outgoing mayor and city Awami League president, refuted the claims and said campaigners of his rival candidate took out a motorcycle procession and hung posters on walls in the city areas. So, this is not fair for him to complain, he said.
Any procession with the use of vehicles for the electoral campaign is prohibited by Section-4 of the electoral code of conduct.
The regional EC office, however, has not received any specific complaints against any mayoral candidate yet.
