JS body on CHT to visit Taindong
The parliamentary standing committee on Chittagong Hill Tracts will visit Taindong, a remote village in Khagrachhari on September 4 to look into a recent attack on indigenous people there.
The Jatiya Sangsad (JS) body took the decision on Sunday at a meeting at the parliament building.
It also recommended that the government buy a helicopter and motorbikes for law enforcement agencies in CHT so that they can take rapid action in case of emergencies and violence.
The decision came after the incident of August 3 when 35 houses were burnt in Taindong, leaving the residents homeless and terrified by the unprovoked act of communal hatred.
According to the victims, several members of their community were beaten up brutally by the arsonists all of whom were Bengali settlers from neighbouring areas.
“We want to know what actually happened there in Taindong. We don’t want to see recurrence of such heinous attack on our indigenous people,” a member of the JS body said.
The committee headed by its chairman, Mohammad Shah Alam, will submit a recommendation to the government on how to reduce tensions between the Bengali and the indigenous people living there.
