Journos protest attacks on media vehicles
Journalist leaders at a protest rally yesterday threatened to hold tougher agitation programmes if attacks on media vehicles in the name of hartals were not stopped.
They said political parties can call for hartals but they cannot violate others' rights.
Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) organised the rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital protesting the recent incidents of torching and vandalising media vehicles during hartals.
Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, BFUJ president, said the journalist society cannot sit idle when media vehicles and journalists continue to be attacked, adding that it is disappointing that all journalist organisations did not participate in their protest programmes.
He warned that if any more media vehicles are attacked during a shutdown, they will hold the party that called for the hartal responsible.
Shaban Mahmud, DUJ general secretary, said they would declare non-stop protest programmes if any media vehicle or journalist is attacked in the name of hartal.
