Jewellery worker beaten to death
A jewellery worker was allegedly beaten to death by his ex-employer's men at Hazari Goli in Chittagong city yesterday, following an incident of theft at the factory of the jeweller's.
The deceased was identified as Priyom Acharjee, 26, of Anwara upazila in Chittagong.
Before quitting his job, Priyom was an employee of Swapnopuri Dice Cutting Centre, where the theft had happened three months back.
Limon Acharjee, the victim's brother, said four men of Pintu, owner of the factory, picked up Priyom from near his rented residence in the city's Koibalyadham area around 1:30am.
They took Priyom to the factory where Pintu and 10 to 12 of his men assaulted his brother, Limon told The Daily Star.
They left critically injured Priyom in front of his residence around 3:00am and fled, he added.
Priyom was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries around 6:00am, said constable Shibu Chandra Nath of CMCH Police Outpost.
Limon admitted that his brother had a dispute with Pintu over professional matters.
Jewellery shopkeepers at Hazari Goli said Priyom had allegedly stolen some valuables from the factory before quitting his job three months back.
Victim's family members or the police, however, could not confirm any theft occurred at the factory.
Priyom's body was sent to CMCH morgue for an autopsy. A case was filed with Kotwali Police Station.
