HC seeks explanation on DCC polls
The High Court on Wednesday asked the Election Commission and the government why they should not be directed to take steps for Dhaka City Corporation election.
The EC and the government will have to submit the replies in four weeks.
An HC bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarker came up with the rule after hearing two separate writ petitions.
Four Supreme Court lawyers on Sunday filed the petitions seeking High Court directives on the Election Commission and the government to take necessary steps immediately for holding election to Dhaka City Corporation North and South.
Earlier on July 11, Barrister Golam Nabi and advocate Alamgir Hossain served two legal notices on the government and the EC stating that the elections to the city corporations should have been held within 180 days from the date of their establishment on December 1, 2011, as per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009 (amended in 2011).
Golam Nabi asked for holding the election to Dhaka South City Corporation while Alamgir for Dhaka North City Corporation poll.
