Grisly murder of 4 in N'ganj
Four people, including the wife of a union parishad chairman, were found dead with throats slit in their house at Jhauchhara village in Sonargaon upazila here yesterday morning.
The dead are Shamima Akhter, 45, second wife of Pirojpur UP Chairman Rafiqul Islam; her brother Rana, 25, and two domestic helps Moni, 20, and Rekha, 22.
Security guard of the three-storey building Abdus Sattar, and Rafiqul's driver said they smelt something fishy failing to get any response after knocking the door of Shamima, who lives on the first floor of the building, in the morning.
The driver then rang up Shamima over the mobile phone, but got no response.
They then informed Rafiqul's relatives who informed the police, said Atiqur Rahman, acting officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonargaon Police Station.
Police rushed to the spot around 11:30am, entered the house by breaking open the door, and discovered the bodies lying in a pool of blood, he added.
Police sent the bodies to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsies.
Police suspected that they were killed sometime between Friday night and early Saturday.
Quoting locals, the OC said, "Rafiqul and Shamima along with two domestic helps used to live at their Jhauchhara residence. Rana came from Sylhet Friday night to visit his sister Shamima."
Rafiqul, vice-president of Sonargaon BNP and also president of its Pirojpur UP unit, was not at home on the fateful night as he is on a three-day trip to Singapore and Malaysia now.
The reason behind the killing could not be ascertained.
Police held security guard Sattar for interrogation.
OC Atiqur Rahman said Sattar admitted that he had heard shouting from the house early Saturday, but he did not pay much heed to it.
No case was filed till filing of the report around 6:00pm.
