Govt mulls one-day weekend
In a bid to cut losses due to hartals, the government will be shortening the weekends by one day in weeks when strikes are called.
The proposal was forwarded yesterday to the Prime Minister's Office for approval.
If approved, government officials will have to work on Saturdays.
“We are planning to cut the regular two-day weekends by one day for every hartal-inflicted week to minimise losses,” Shaikh Md Wahid-Uz-Zaman, principal secretary to the prime minister, told The Daily Star.
Last month the country witnessed nine hartal days and may witness more in this month.
The government has already ordered various banks to operate on Saturdays to recover losses.
