Elderly man dies after cop beating
An elderly man died after he was allegedly beaten up by police at Ghavishimul village in Gafaragon upazila here yesterday.
The dead is Sohrab Uddin, 60, former member of Panchbagh Union Parishad.
Locals said a police team led by Sub-inspector Monohar of Pagla Police Station went to the village around 12:00 noon to arrest one Khokon, accused in a case registered at the police station under Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act, 2000.
When the police team reached the bazar area, locals including Sohrab Uddin gathered at the spot and informed law enforcers that Khokon has been on bail.
At one stage, Sohrab got involved in an altercation with police. Incensed at this, SI Monohar used his baton to beat Sohrab to the ground, leaving him injured.
After sometime, the elderly man died there. Police, however, could not arrest Khokon.
Contacted, SI Monohar denied beating up Sohrab. He claimed that the man died after he had left the spot.
Md Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge of Pagla Police Station, said Sohrab had been suffering from respiratory problems. He fell sick during an altercation with police and later died of heart attack, added the OC.
Saifus Saleheen, chairman of Panchbagh Union Parishad, could not confirm whether Sohrab died of heart attack or not.
The dead was yet to be buried at 9:00pm yesterday.
