EC hopes for dialogue to resolve crisis
The Election Commission is looking to the two major political parties for resolving the current political crisis soon through dialogue.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakib Uddin Ahmed said this while announcing yesterday the schedule for the by-election in the Naogaon-5 constituency.
“The commission is preparing for the national election despite the political unrest,” he added.
Replying to a query, the CEC said he would meet acting Speaker Shawkat Ali at the latter's office today to discuss the schedule for the presidential election.
According to the by-election timetable, Naogaon-5 will go to the polls on May 25. The last date for submitting nominations is April 25. Nominations will be scrutinised on April 28, and could be withdrawn by May 6.
Of 284,217 voters in the constituency, 143,213 are female and 141,004 male.
The Naogaon seat fell vacant following the death of Awami League leader Abdul Jalil on March 6.
