Create better environmentto attract talents
President Iajuddin Ahmed yesterday underscored the need for creating better environment to attract meritorious youths in the police department. "Better working atmosphere as well as enhanced service facilities can attract talent youths in the police department in the country," he said at a function held at the Bangabhaban on the occasion of Police Week 2003.
Home Minister Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, Inspector General of Police Mudabbir Hossain Chowdhury and senior police officials were present on the occasion.
President Iajuddin called for expansion of police department, saying that the existing number of police personnel is inadequate compared to the requirements of the total population.
He, however, said that merely the increase of manpower would not ensure quality service from police unless better training facilities are provided.
"There is no alternative to continued training for police to develop a skilled force in the country. Training is getting priority in every country, so we have to expedite our efforts to do the same in our country," he said.
He also appreciated the government's move to recruit 5,500 personnel in the police department.
President Iajuddin said the main responsibility of the police is to protect lives and property of the people. "And improved law and order situation is the precondition for a peaceful society," he added.
He said that although the police profession is different in nature and risky in many cases, they can earn confidence and love from people through proper enforcement of law in their respective areas.
In this regard, he mentioned the performance of Bangladesh Police personnel under UN peacekeeping missions at different trouble-torn areas in the world.
