Pushed off bus: Helper held over businessman’s death in Ctg
Police Bureau of Investigation today arrested the helper of a minibus for allegedly pushing off a man, who was run over and killed following an altercation in Chittagong city on August 27.
The arrestee, Mohammad Manik, 32, was held from Ramgoti area in Laxmipur district, reports our Chittagong staff correspondent quoting PBI Inspector Santosh Chakma.
Manik was in hiding at his in-law’s house in Ramgati, the official said.
On the day, following an altercation apparently over bus fare, the helper allegedly pushed Rezaul Karim Roni, 35, a businessman, in Chittagong’s City Gate area, off the minibus. He fell down and got stuck between the road and the vehicle. As the driver drove on, Roni was crushed under the rear wheels, his relatives said, quoting witnesses.
On Tuesday night, Roni's uncle filed a murder case against Didarul Alam, 35, driver of the minibus, and Manik, the helper, with Akbar Shah Police Station.
The death sparked protests among locals who barricaded the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the area for nearly an hour that day.
His elder brother Zillur Rahman said Roni was in the bus on his way home from Bhatiary. Suddenly around 1:35pm, he called Zillur over his mobile phone and asked him to come near the City Gate, saying he had “some issues with the driver and his helper”.
