Charges against Muki, 14 others
The Detective Branch (DB) of Police yesterday pressed charges against Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) cadre Mokammel Hayat Khan Muki and 14 others in the Sabequn Nahar Sony murder case.
DB Assistant Commissioner SM Akhteruzzaman, the investigation officer (IO) of the murder case, submitted a charge sheet yesterday evening to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM's) Court, Dhaka.
The 14 others are Tagar, Mukul, Mohammad Dulal, Masum Billah, Shooter Nuru, Shaikh Solaiman alias Babul, Hafiz, Nurul Islam alias Sagar, Zakir Hossain Patwari Munna, Tajul Islam Pulak, Aminul Islam, Ahsanul Karim, Sharif Imam and Mahabub Kaisar.
The charge sheet showed 17 people as prosecution witnesses.
Of the accused, nine including Tagar were arrested earlier while the rest including prime accused Muki are absconding since the murder. Among them, Tagar, Mukul and Sagar gave confessional statements before the CMM's Court on different dates.
Sony, a student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was killed on the BUET campus during a gunfight between two factions of JCD, the ruling BNP's student front, on June 8 last year.
BUET Security Officer Golam Kuddus Khan filed a murder case with the Lalbagh Police Station saying that Sony died during crossfire when the JCD factions were engaged in a gun battle.
The two factions -- one led by Muki and the other by Tagar -- locked in the gunfight on the day over establishing dominance on the campus and tender manipulation.
Three sawn-off rifles and some cartridges and bloodstained clothes of the victim were recovered on the campus.
Meanwhile, four national dailies ran a piece of news that DB submitted the charge sheet on Wednesday. However, it was found untrue.
