Boy killed in clashes
A boy was killed and at least 55 people including seven cops were injured in clashes between pro-hartal activists and police and ruling party men across the country during the last day of the 36-hour hartal yesterday.
Besides, there were incidents of blasts, vandalism and arson in many parts of the country.
The dead is Asgar Ali Limon, 14, son of Saudi expatriate Lokman Hossain of Upar Rajarampur moholla in Chapainawabganj.
The BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced the shutdown protesting denial of bail to seven top BNP leaders and demanding restoration of the caretaker government system.
Yesterday, the alliance withdrew the hartal in Savar at 11:00am, in Dhaka district and city at 2:15pm and in rest of the country at 3:30pm to help the rescue operation at a building collapse site in Savar.
In Chapainawabganj, Islami Chhatra Shibir men started demonstration blocking the Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi highway at Upar Rajarampur area around 11:00am.
As police tried to disperse the protesters, the Shibir men retaliated blasting homemade bombs, triggering the clash.
At one stage, law enforcers opened fire and lobbed tear gas shells. At least 18 people including an executive magistrate and two policemen were injured.
Of them, Asgar received a bullet in his throat and was rushed to Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around noon.
Police later handed over the body to the family members of the deceased. Family members said they are involved in the politics of Jamaat-e-Islami.
In Narayanganj, at least 10 people were injured in a clash between pro-hartal activists and police around 6:00am.
Witnesses said some BNP men brought out a procession at Chashara College Road and started vandalising vehicles. As police tried to resist the pickets, the clash ensued.
During the clash, pickets vandalised at least five vehicles and blasted five cocktails.
In Rajshahi, at least 20 people including five policemen were hurt as BNP-Jamaat men fought pitched battles with police and Awami League activists at Holidagachhi intersection in Charghat upazila around 10:00am.
At least six BNP men including its upazila unit general secretary Rezaul Karim were injured in a clash between activists of Awami League and BNP at Pirganj intersection of Thakurgaon around 11:30pm.
In Chandpur, pro-hartal pickets blocked different roads and railway tracks around 6:00pm by felling trees and setting tyres afire. Later police removed the barricades from the roads and tracks.
Two people including a seven-year-old kid were injured when a homemade bomb went off near the Shaheed Minar in Feni town around noon. They were admitted to Feni Sadar Hospital.
Pro-hartal pickets also vandalised and torched public transport at different places in Dhaka, Narsingdi, Chittagong, Madaripur and Feni.
