The main opposition BNP enforced an indefinite shutdown in northern district of Thakurgaon Sunday.
The decision, which came from an emergency meeting of the district chapter of the BNP at 5:30pm, came into effect immediately, said Mamunur Rashid, a district-level leader of the party.
The meeting was convened shortly after a court in Dhaka sent eight BNP leaders, including Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Mirza Abbas, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, Abdullah Al Noman, Moazzem Hossain Alal and Barkatullah Bulu.
Meanwhile, BNP activists put blockades on Panchagarh-Dinajpur highway in Khochabari and Vulli areas in support of the hartal, said locals.
Most of the shops in Thakurgaon town were shut down immediately after the strike was enforced, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.
