Protect family of Magura rape victim

MJF urges authorities

Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) has expressed grave concern over the safety and well-being of the family of the victim in the recent Magura rape and murder case, urging authorities to act swiftly to ensure their protection, especially the victim's 14-year-old sister, who is also a child bride.

"The family is facing real and imminent threats of intimidation and possible acts of violence from the family of the convicted perpetrator -- who are also the in-laws of the victim's sister," said MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam in a statement yesterday.

"These threats are especially alarming given that the main accused has been convicted, while other accused family members have been acquitted of all charges," she added. "The fear of retaliation expressed by the family must not be taken lightly."

"We strongly urge the authorities to act swiftly and decisively to prevent any further acts of violence, threats, or harassment against this already traumatised family," she added.

The foundation also voiced deep concern over the wider issue of gender-based violence and child rights violations across the country. It highlighted that the victim's sister, being a 14-year-old child bride, reflects the urgent and persistent crisis of child rape and child marriage in Bangladesh.

MJF urged the government to clarify what concrete steps are being taken to prevent such violations and to ensure the safety and dignity of vulnerable girls nationwide.

Standing in solidarity with the Magura victim's family, MJF reiterated its demand for justice, accountability, and comprehensive protection measures to be enacted without delay.
