Journalist among three injured in attack on BNP event in Gazipur

A journalist among three people were injured when a group of miscreants attacked a view-exchange meeting of the BNP in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur this afternoon.
The injured have been identified as Gazipur District Jamuna TV cameraman Rocky Hossain, Gazipur District BNP Convening Committee member Sakhawat Hossain Selim, and his driver Delwar Hossain, according to BNP sources.
Rocky was admitted to Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for treatment, said Joynal Abedin Mandal, officer-in-charge of Kapasia Police Station.
Speaking to this correspondent, Jamuna TV district correspondent Md Palash said the meeting, organised by the local BNP, began around 12:00pm at the Cheragaali intersection with Sakhawat presiding.
Around 2:00pm, a group of individuals riding 20 to 25 motorcycles stormed the venue and began vandalising the stage, chairs, and tables.
As Rocky and others were recording the incident, the attackers beat him and several others, Palash said.
"The attackers chanted slogans in the name of Gazipur District BNP Joint Convener Shah Riazul Hannan. They have disrupted several of our meetings in the past," Sakhawat told The Daily Star.
When contacted, Hannan said, "I visited the injured journalist at the hospital. If it is proven through investigation that those involved in the attack are my party men, organisational action will be taken against them."
OC Joynal confirmed to this correspondent that police were sent to the scene and that at least three people were injured in the incident.
