CPB top leadership without Selim after 30 years
Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) is set to elect new top leadership, without Mujahidul Islam Selim at the helm of the party, after 30 years.
Delegates of the 12th Congress of the party that ended late yesterday elected a 43-member central committee, said a party statement today.
Selim was either general secretary or president of the Marxist party since 1993, when most of CPB leaders left the party following the fall of the Soviet Union.
Former DUCSU Vice President Selim was elected general secretary of the party in 1993. He was re-elected to the post several times between 1993 and 2012. He was also elected as the president in 2012.
The party congress in 2012 decided that no leaders shall be elected to the office of the president and general secretary more than twice.
During the four-day long congress, starting on Friday in the capital, there was a proposal for bringing a change regarding two terms but it was withdrawn, said several delegates.
Selim was among the 43-member central committee that was elected by the delegates of 12th Congress. The committee comprises 11 new faces including Kaberi Gayen, Aslam Khan, Manabendra Deb, Lucky Akter, Nimai Ganguly, Motaleb Molla, Ainun Nahar Lipi, and Abid Hossain.
The committee also includes nine female members.
The new committee will sit in a meeting next Friday to elect president and general secretary, presidium and other secretariat members. Several top leaders of the CPB said there are discussions that either Mohammad Shah Alam or Mrinal Chowdhury may become president of the party.
Either of Ruhin Hossain Prince, Abdullah Al Kafee Ratan, Sazzad Zahir Chandan and Mihir Gosh might become the next general secretary.
