Act against advisers ‘out to destabilise the country’

BNP urges Yunus

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed yesterday said the party has urged Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to take action against certain advisers who are "conspiring to destabilise the country".

"We've informed the chief adviser of their activities. Now he must act," he said while inaugurating BNP's membership drive at Sylhet Shilpakala Academy.

Addressing the chief adviser, Salahuddin said, "I am speaking softly, honourable chief adviser. Maybe it will reach your ears; maybe not. If it does, that's good. But if you choose not to listen, it will be bad for everyone."

The BNP leader further said, "The path you are walking is undemocratic. You are speaking in a language that opposes democracy, and your actions go against the rule of law."

He called on the chief adviser to honour the pledge to hold the national election by December, saying, "This will uphold your dignity, reassure the public, restore stability, and revive the economy."

He criticised the current situation and questioned the need for an Election Commission if, as one adviser claimed, "a mass uprising" elected them as the government.

"If that's the case, why maintain an electoral system at all?" he asked.

In another event in Dhaka, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said the party would never reach a compromise with the Awami League.

"We will not do it, and if anyone else tries, we will resist them too," he said during a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.

Meanwhile, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman said the party plans to develop ward-wise playgrounds in Dhaka if it comes to power in the next election, reports UNB.

"The playground will be developed on three to four bighas of land at least between two wards where children can play, elderly people can walk, and people can breathe fresh air," he said.

Tarique shared the plans while addressing the prize-giving ceremony of the Arafat Rahman Koko Memorial Trust Cricket Tournament at a hotel in London on Sunday.
