Why can’t govt officials contest JS polls within 3yrs of retirement, asks HC

The High Court today questioned the provision that prohibited former government officials from contesting Jatiya Sangsad elections in the three years after retirement.
The court issued a rule asking government and Election Commission to explain in four weeks why the provision of section 12(1) (f) of Representation of People Order, (RPO), 1972 should not be declared illegal.
The bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Md Bashir Ullah issued the rule following a writ petition filed by Brigadier General (retired) Md Shamim Kamal challenging the legality of the provision.
Lawyer Hassan MS Azim appeared on behalf of the petitioner during the hearing.
