Teen held over murder of two aunts

The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with the murder of his two aunts in Shewrapara, said police.
On Friday, Mariam Begum and her sister Sufia Begum were killed in their rented apartment. Following the incident, Mariam's daughter filed a murder case with Mirpur Police Station.
Talking at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre yesterday, Nasirul Islam, joint commissioner of DB, said the accused, the 14-year-old nephew of the victims, went to the apartment of his aunt Mariam around 12:50pm on that day.
While Mariam was busy serving him refreshments and her younger sister Sufia was cleaning dishes on the veranda, the boy stole Tk 3,000 from a wallet kept beside the TV, intending to buy a used bicycle, the official said.
The official said when Mariam noticed the theft, she scolded him and threatened to inform his mother. The boy suddenly grabbed a knife from the dining table and stabbed Mariam multiple times, he added.
The DB official said, "Hearing her sister's screams, Sufia rushed in from the other room. The boy also stabbed her. He then brought a grinding stone from the kitchen and struck both sisters on the head multiple times and fled the scene."
Detectives located him at his grandfather's house in Jhalakathi. Based on his confession, investigators also recovered several pieces of evidence.
Police produced him before a Dhaka court yesterday where he gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the DB official said.
