Shipbreaking workers want Eid bonuses by May 31

Shipbreaking workers yesterday urged yard authorities to ensure disbursement of salaries and Eid-ul-Azha bonuses by May 31.
The workers, under the banner of Shipbreaking Workers Trade Union Forum, held a rally yesterday morning at the gate of Hafiz Jute Mill in Sonaichhari area of Chattogram's Sitakunda to press home their demand.
At the rally, union leaders called on the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments to take necessary action in this regard.
Speakers also expressed frustration that the minimum wage declared in 2018 has yet to be implemented six years on.
They demanded immediate formation of a new wage board and declaration of a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.
"Shipbreaking workers toil under extremely hazardous conditions. Yet, they are consistently denied fair wages. We urge yard owners to clear all dues before Eid, including the festival allowance equivalent to one month's basic salary, and full payment of wages for May," said Tapan Dutta, convener of the forum.
