The police administration has assured that maximum security measures have been taken in Chattogram ahead of the Eid celebrations.

However, people fear that some isolated incidents may take place if police are not vigilant. In recent months, there have been quite a few incidents where tourists were attacked or harassed.

On February 28, Yusuf Ali, a sub-inspector on duty at Patenga Sea Beach, one of Chattogram's main tourist attractions, came under attack by a group of people while conducting security check at a check-post on Patenga Outer Ring Road.

Yesterday evening, a tourist named Abu Sayeed told The Daily Star that the harassment by miscreants at the beach increased as there are fewer patrol police due to the Eid holidays.

Meanwhile, on February 4, visitors were attacked at the newly developed Faujdarhat DC Park, and parts of the park were set on fire.

Additionally, on March 8, a college student was harassed while visiting Guliakhali Sea Beach in Sitakunda.

Moreover, on November 7 last year, a young woman was raped while visiting Mahamaya Lake in Mirsharai.

Security concerns are also growing at Parki Sea Beach in Anwara upazila, another emerging tourist destination in the district. There is no dedicated tourist police outpost at the beach, thereby leaving tourists without security, especially after sunset.

Such incidents have been occurring time and again at the different tourist spots in Chattogram, with no visible initiative taken by the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and law enforcers in this regard, raising safety concerns for tourists and visitors.

Abul Hasanat Mohammad Habibul Bari, manager of Hotel Saikat which is run by Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation in Chattogram, said tourist police are responsible for ensuring security at these spots, while the district administration oversees the overall facilities for tourists.

Contacted, Uttam Prasad Pathak, superintendent of Tourist Police in Chattogram, said they were yet to begin operations at several tourist spots in the district.

However, maximum security is being ensured in areas where tourist police are present, he added.

He further said a three-tier security system has been installed at different tourist sites in Chattogram during the Eid holidays.
