Nur's remarks 'an attempt to destabilise the force': BPSA

The Bangladesh Police Service Association (BPSA) has strongly condemned the recent remarks by Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Odhikar Parishad, in which he issued threats against police, calling the comments "criminal in nature" and "an attempt to destabilise the force".

A video of Nur's speech, delivered during a public rally on May 22, 2025, went viral on social media recently.

In it, Nur was heard saying: "If the police of this interim government lay a hand on us, that hand won't remain intact. Let me be clear -- just as people once beat police officers in Jatrabari and hung them from a bridge, if any activist or leader of Gono Odhikar Parishad is assaulted, we'll respond the same way."

In a statement issued today, the BPSA said such remarks amounted to a direct threat against a key state institution.

"The Bangladesh Police is an integral part of the democratic framework and tirelessly works to maintain public order. Such a provocative and indecent statement from a political leader is not only unacceptable but also constitutes a criminal offence," the association said.

The association warned that remarks like these could erode public trust and police morale, especially at a time when the force is working relentlessly to uphold law and order across the country.

"We believe this statement was made with the intent to weaken the force and demoralise its members to serve the interests of a particular quarter," the statement reads.

The association called on political leaders to engage in constructive criticism rather than incite hostility against law-enforcing agencies.

It also cautioned that such rhetoric could fuel hatred and disturb the country's social harmony.

The statement was jointly signed by Md Nazmul Karim Khan, police commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police and president of the BPSA, and Md Anisuzzaman, superintendent of police of Dhaka district and general secretary of the association's central executive committee.
