Mayor Khaleque, 41 councillors take charge of KCC
Four months after the elections, newly-elected Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque and 41 councillors formally took charge today.
The general council of KCC convened a meeting at Shaheed Altaf Auditorium of Nagar Bhaban where Khaleque and the councillors took charge.
Khaleque said, "As I promised, I will develop Khulna city into a green city with the help of city people. I will try my best to keep Khulna free from waterlogging and make it a planned, healthy, modern and smart city."
Khaleque, president of Khulna city unit of Awami League, was elected KCC mayor in an election on June 12.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on July 3 administered Khaleque's oath while the councilors took oath from LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain.
But Khaleque could not formally take charge as mayor due to some "legal obligation", said Chief Executive Officer Laskar Tajul Islam, who performed the duties related to the management of the city corporation so far.
Meanwhile, the term of the current councillors expired yesterday.
