Mayor Hanif’s anniversary of death today

Today is the 15th death anniversary of Mohammad Hanif, the first elected mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation and president of Dhaka city Awami League.
On the occasion, President M Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in separate messages recalled Hanif's memories and contributions to the nation and AL.
Mayor Mohammad Hanif Memorial Foundation will offer prayers at his grave at Azimpur graveyard around 11:00am and hold special prayers at Mayor Mohammad Hanif Jame Mosque in Azimpur, said a press release.
Members of AL and its associate bodies as well as people from all walks of life will take part in the fateha and special prayers.
A close associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Hanif was born in Dhaka on April 1, 1944.
He joined politics in his student life under the tutelage of Bangabandhu.
He also played a significant role in different democratic movements.
Hanif suffered splinter injuries while shielding AL President Sheikh Hasina during the August 21 grenade attack on an AL rally on Bangabandhu Avenue in 2004. He died of a cardiac arrest at a city hospital on November 28, 2006.
Hanif's son Sayeed Khokon is a former mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation.
