Ishraque’s supporters resume protest at Nagar Bhaban

Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain and a section of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) employees resumed their protest in front of Nagar Bhaban today, demanding that Ishraque be officially appointed as mayor without further delay.
The protest, which resumed following a 48-hour pause, has brought citizen services to a standstill, causing widespread inconvenience for city dwellers.
The main gates of the building remain locked. Under the banner of "Dhakabashi," Ishraque's supporters were seen marching through the compound at intervals. After each procession, they gathered at the entrance, chanting slogans in support of Ishraque.
"We will not leave until the people's mayor, Ishraque Hossain, is handed over charges," one of the protesters told The Daily Star.
Due to the demonstrations, the deliveries of all 28 civic services, including waste management, mosquito control, the issuance of birth and death certificates, have been suspended since May 15.
The local government ministry officials on Saturday received a High Court order which cleared Ishraque's path to become the DSCC mayor. The ministry has yet to set a date for the ceremony.
But multiple sources at the ministry said the oath-taking may take place within this week, if all formalities are completed in time.
Ishraque's supporters have been demonstrating since May 14 demanding that he be sworn in and given the responsibilities of the city mayor.
