The High Court today stayed the proceedings of a case -- over violating labour law -- filed against Nobel laureate and Grameen Telecom Chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus for six months.

The court also issued a rule asking the state to explain why the case proceedings against Dr Yunus should not be scrapped.

The HC bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan came up with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by Dr Yunus, Assistant Attorney General Mahfuzur Rahman Likhon told The Daily Star today.

Dr Yunus filed the petition challenging the legality of the filing and initiation of the case against him. The Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments filed the case on September 9.

A labour court in Dhaka on October 12 granted bail to the Nobel laureate in the case. Lawyer Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared for Dr Yunus at the time.
