HC lawyer Ramen Roy fighting for his life in ICU
High Court lawyer Ramen Roy, who was caught in a clash at Shahbagh on November 25, is fighting for his life in the ICU at a hospital in Dhaka.
Witnesses said Ramen came under attack when he was returning home from the court chamber.
Demonstrators had gathered in Shahbagh that day to protest the arrest of former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari. They were later attacked by an unidentified group and Ramen Roy, who was passing by the area, was hit on the head with an iron rod, leaving him severely injured.
One family member of Ramen said he was first taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and then shifted to Green Life Hospital after primary treatment.
He was again shifted to the Popular Medical College Hospital from there as he needed ICU support. Later, he was admitted to Labaid Hospital's ICU for better treatment.
"He is in a coma and fighting for his life. Please pray for him," said the family member.
Shahbag Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Mansur told The Daily Star last night that they received a complaint in this regard yesterday evening.
"We are investigating the matter," he said.
Yesterday, Rumor Scanner, a Bangladeshi fact-checking organisation, debunked reports from various Indian media outlets that Ramen Roy was former ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari's lawyer. Citing an ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson's tweet, some Indian media outlets said Ramen Roy was attacked because of his association with Chinmoy.
Rumor Scanner said Ramen Roy was attacked on November 25, a day before violent clashes broke out on court premises in Chattogram when Chinmoy was denied bail.
