Attempt to rob bank by digging tunnel fails in Lalmonirhat

An attempted robbery at Sonali Bank's Barabari branch in Lalmonirhat was foiled early today as locals raised the alarm, forcing the robbers to flee.

The robbers tried to enter the bank by digging a tunnel through its back wall around 12:30am. However, they fled when the bank's night guard noticed the activity and shouted for help, said locals.

Raju Mia, manager of the branch, told The Daily Star that the robbers were unable to enter the bank.

"All the money and assets in the bank remain secure," he said.

Army personnel and police rushed to the spot following the incident.

Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nurnabi said they are investigating the matter.

"The robbers managed to escape before the locals could gather, but we are working on it," he added.
